History of the Main Duck Island Lighthouse

A lighthouse was placed on Main Duck Island in the early 1800s, however, the tower above was built in 1914. Due to the harsh winter conditions on Lake Ontario, the lighthouse was made out of reinforced concrete. At one time, the light housed a Fresnel lens. The lens has now been replaced by modern equipment and is solar powered.

One special event that took place at the tower was a visit by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

Directions: This island sits about 11.5 miles east off of Point Petre. The best way to view it is by boat. From what I was reading, you can land a boat there, but you have to be careful.
