History of the Lorain Lighthouse

After the Lorain East Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1965, the above lighthouse was slated for demolition. It has been saved by many determined individuals in the city of Lorain that weren't ready to see it go. Mother Nature also chipped in to help save the lighthouse by throwing some brutal October storms which in turn postponed the demolition. The lighthouse is now overseen by the Port of Lorain Foundation. They are dedicated to restoring the lighthouse and possibly creating a museum inside it.

Directions: While on Route 2, head north on Ohio Route 58 (Leavitt Road). This will take you into the City of Lorain, Ohio. At the end, make a left onto Ohio Route 6. Follow this up to Oberlin Street and make a left. This will take you back to the Water Treatment Plant. If you stay to the left hand side, you can go behind the plant to the boat launches. This is probably the best area to get photos of the lighthouse. You will need to use a telephoto lens as the lighthouse sits out in the lake on a breakwater.
