Point Reyes Lighthouse

History of the Point Reyes Lighthouse

A very remote place, very desolate. That is my description of this very cool lighthouse. This was the first light I have ever seen that is the equivalent of only "a top" of an East Coast lighthouse.

This light sits the equivalent of 31 flights down on a rocky bluff along the California coastline. The day when I was there was very nice, but rumor has it, this day is not like most. From reading different books about this light, this is one of the "foggiest places" in America. In fact, the day I was there, they even had the fog signal blaring.

This tower sits 294 feet above sea level, and is approximately 40' tall and is encased in iron plates, which has allowed it to withstand the intense weather the point has endured. Some of this includes over 100+ MPH gales that the past keepers had to endure.

From what some of the Park Rangers were saying, supposedly off the point you can see whales. I didn't see any there, but there was a museum that had some very large whale bones at the top of the Point.

I have included some other pictures that I took while there. I feel that they show several different interesting aspects of the lightstation.

Directions: From Highway 101 north of San Francisco, exit at Sir Francis Drake Blvd. You will follow this for about 21 miles to Ca Route 1. Follow this north for about 1.8 makes, and then make a left onto Sir Francis Drake Blvd. This Sir Francis Drake Blvd. will continue for about 20 more miles out to the point and the lighthouse.
