History of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse

The lighthouse was first built in 1825 and then rebuilt in 1829 after the original shoddy tower fell apart. The lighthouse was updated in 1862 and finally automated in 1933.

The lighthouse is the oldest standing lighthouse in Michigan and is still active. The lighthouse sits on an active Coast Guard Base, but is easily viewed from a park on Gratiot Ave. just north of the Bluewater Bridge to Canada.

Directions: From State Route 25 in Port Huron, take Garfield Street east to Lake Huron. This will put you right in front of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is gated as it is still an active Coast Guard Station, however, you can get great photos from the park next door.
