History of the False Duck Island Lighthouse

The original False Duck Island Lighthouse was built in 1829 on False Duck Island offshore. In 1905, the lighthouse was struck by lightning and just about destroyed the tower. It was later replaced in 1965 by an automated modern steel light. The remains of the old tower were destroyed by a Canadian Coast Guard tender. A cable attached to the tower easily toppled the damaged tower.

A few years later in 1967, the lantern room and light were installed in this 30 foot tower. The lighthouse in the picture above sits on the grounds of the Mariner's Memorial Park. This park was as a memoriam for all the sailors, etc of Prince Edward County that lost their lives. It is open weekends from Victoria Day through Thanksgiving with the exception of July through Labor Day when it is open daily 10am - 5pm.

Directions: The lighthouse is on the grounds of the Mariner's Park Museum. The museum is on County Route #13 in Milford, Ontario. Please note that these gps coordinates are approximated as I did not have a GPS unit when I visited this light a long time ago.
